Research and Distinctions
ESPM represents a unique integration of the biological, physical and social sciences in a single multidisciplinary department with a focus on the environment. Through collaboration with postdoctoral scholars, visiting scientists, and both graduate and undergraduate students, ESPM faculty and extension specialists conduct research designed to meet the environmental challenges of the 21st century. This research integrates knowledge across scales of organization from chemical to societal and is organized under the rubrics of five research areas:• Ecosystem stewardshipThrough their careers, ESPM faculty and extension specialists have been recognized with a variety of honors and awards. Such distinctions include 1 Wolf Prize, 2 MacArthur Fellows, 4 National Academy of Science Members, 2 American Academy of Arts and Science Members, 2 American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellows, 1 UK Royal Society Fellow, 1 European Academy of Sciences Member, 5 Guggenheim Fellows, and 5 Fulbright Fellows. In addition, faculty have received 4 UC Berkeley Distinguished Teaching Awards, 2 UC Berkeley Chancellor's Professorships, and 2 UC Berkeley Distinguished Faculty Mentor Awards.
